My Teacher will supply you with our short film on a DVD
We have placed a QR code in my postcard as it is a great way to direct people straight to our website. With the high demand in phones with access to the internet and social networking sites QR codes are becoming more popular. I have placed this on my postcard as students and young people our target audience usually have an up to date phones, these phones you can download an app which reads the QR code. This code would ensure that if the audience wanted to find out more about the film they wouldn't have to wait until they were at a computer to view the website. This codes opens the opportunity to browse the website wherever you are and I think this is important as it is convenient for the audience.
Here is the text that is in the film review:
The subtle message behind Lauren Phillips dumped is absorbed while watching this artistic yet modern short film. The contrast between the French New Wave style and Phillip’s modern touch arguably complement the whirlwind of emotions Billy displays played by Harper. On the other hand by trying to use two very different styles they have made their film lack in professional detail.
Shot on a high definition video around Hertfordshire’s Kings Langley, the film taps into relationship deprivation and the influence solitude has on individuals, causing them to discover coping strategies. Creating us to question ourselves, how would we feel in this situation and how would we cope?
Billy’s relationship with his mother in no-existence this reflects in his vulnerability and trusts that is displayed openly. As he tries to cope with solitude he finds a comfort under the stairs reflecting the vulnerability and dark open emotion Billy displays. When Billy hears his mother no longer wants him he runs this part of the film works well inspired by Truffaut’s 400 Blows it creates the same realisation of how Billy has been affected. The endings close up distresses the audience as they connect with Billy, this inserts the close relationship Phillips aims the audience to experience.
The natural lightening generates forlorn atmosphere along with the setting. The school chosen works well, its grey stoned brick and chipped window frames reflect on Billy inner emotions. The inspired run by Truffaut’s 400 Blows is clearly not the same when you compare the setting; it is shorter and less effective in contrast to Truffaut’s French suburbs and beaches. The sea is an enhanced metaphor for the end of everything and the emotion he has trapped inside crashing down on him. Phillips’ portrays the end as a hedge in a familiar destination to Billy which is not a sentimental message to the audience.
Similarly inspired is the sound within the short film, Chloe Taylor Sound and Music decided to add a drone to the film, this creates a poignant mood to the film and adds to the narrative, it defines the bareness that Billy feels. On the other hand the extent of the drone could be portrayed as a technical fault or editing mishap.
Due to the genre being social realist Dumped may struggle becoming a debut film as it doesn’t show individuality within the narrative so to speak. The niche short film market is fairly niche so by this filming going along with the guidelines Lauren Phillips has not challenged herself. The storyline is also subtle un-knowledgeable others of short films may not necessarily identify with the depth of the storyline first time round, but short film lovers will be engrossed in Billy’s life and suppressed emotions.
Astounding young Actor Harper dives deep into the emotions of Billy, his expression are marvellous and the subtlety creates a sense of melancholy. Although the narrative appears to be confusing and lacking structure Harper’s character upholds this lack. Harper constructs an attention from the audience which focuses you on his defencelessness and abandoned characteristics. With lack of dialogue throughout the film I would have thought it would be hard to portray any kind of character but Harper has done a grand job.
The subtle storyline does not bore the audience it instead allows them to process the preferred reading allowing them to leave the viewing with their own thoughts and interpretation of events in the film; the social problems suggested in this film develop an understanding that stays with you after the film. I think I speak for the majority of those drawn in by social realist films, by saying that this ‘is not a walk out’ film, you a drawn by Billy’s character from the start and feel like you are his only relationship. You leave thinking are their children this lonely in our society?
